How to make a delicious hot Miel at home! Made with coffee, milk and honey - this recipe comes together in only a few minutes. Finish with a sprinkle of cinnamon and nutmeg for a cozy start to your day!
Cafe con Miel (Honey Latte)
I've been a long time fan of a hot Miel! The simplicity of coffee, steamed milk and honey is perfect. Just lightly sweetened, this coffee drink is a delicious way to start your day or great for an afternoon pick me up!
Even better, it's super easy to make with only a handful of simple ingredients you likely already have at home.
You can use espresso or strongly brewed coffee - the choice is yours!
What is a Miel?
Miel is a delicious Spanish coffee drink that originated in Spain. It combines coffee, steamed milk and a drizzle of honey, which is how it actually got it's name! Miel means honey in Spanish.
How to Pronounce Miel.
Miel is pronounced the same as "meal".
Why You'll love this Recipe.
- Just lightly sweetened with honey. Honey is the perfect natural sweetener! It lightly sweetens the coffee while adding a unique, delicious flavor.
- Easy to make. All you need is coffee, milk, and honey. If desired, a pinch of cinnamon and nutmeg! This recipe comes together in only a few minutes.
- So delicious! I've been making this recipe regularly for the last year, it's just that good!
Is there coffee in a Miel?
Yes, lots of it! Made with either espresso or strongly brewed coffee - the choice is yours!
I like to make my hot Miel with a double shot of espresso, but you can also make a Miel with about ½ cup strongly brewed coffee!
If you prefer, you can also use decaffeinated coffee. I actually always go for half-caffeinated!
Espresso vs. Brewed Coffee.
Espresso is a game changer when it comes to making coffee drinks at home. You can't get that same coffee shop taste at home with just strongly brewed coffee; it'll still taste great, just different!
I know what you're thinking, espresso machines are so expensive. Well, good news, they aren't all expensive! I actually own a small espresso machine that I got on Amazon, and it works great! I even can make up to 4 shots of espresso at a time!
I'm now able to make coffee drinks at home that taste even better than Starbucks and Caribou! I'm also able to control the ingredients, as well as how much sweetener is added.
What's even better, since the espresso machine is small, it doesn't take up much counter space! Click here for exact one I have and love!
What does a Cafe Miel Taste like?
Honestly, very delicious!!
Miel coffee tastes pretty similar to a latte, but typically has a stronger coffee flavor, and with every sip, you taste a hint of honey and cinnamon. It's perfection.
If you like your coffee just lightly sweetened, then this is the drink for you! Aside from sweetening the drink, honey offers a unique, tasty flavor that can't be beat!
Ingredients.
- Coffee. Either espresso or strongly brewed coffee. You can use caffeinated or decaffeinated.
- Milk. I like to use 2% or whole milk, but you can substitute whatever is your favorite!
- Honey. I like raw, unfiltered honey because of the health benefits, but any honey you have works great!
- Cinnamon and nutmeg. These spices are optional, but recommend! Just a pinch of each adds delicious flavor.

FAQ & Substitutions.
Can I use strongly brewed coffee instead of espresso in a hot miel?
Yes! If you use strongly brewed coffee, I recommend using about ½ cup of coffee since it isn't as strong as espresso.
What kind of milk should I use in a hot miel?
I prefer whole or 2% milk because it nice and creamy, which makes for great a coffee drink! But, you can certainly use whatever you prefer. You can even use milk alternatives, if desired.
How to steam or froth milk?
Electric milk frother. I like to use an electric milk frother when making coffee drinks! It heats the milk while creating a nice thick layer of foam that sits on top of the drink, like you see in these pictures! I love my electric milk frother so much that I just got one for my mom, and it works like a dream, creating the thickest layer of foam!
Handheld milk frother. This is like a mini handheld whisk that is battery powered. Heat the milk, then stick the handheld milk frother into the cup with the milk and turn on the frother. Froth for a few minutes until foamy.
Steamer. Most espresso machines come equipped with a steamer! Simply add the desired amount of milk to a cup, dip the steamer into the milk and turn on. Steam until hot and frothy!
Stovetop. Heat the milk in a saucepan over medium-low heat until hot and bubbly, whisking frequently!

I’m maybe a little late to this post but found it while researching the exact origin of the miel and I wanted to comment on something. The article says miel is pronounced like meal, but as a native spanish speaker and a barista I have to mention that’s incorrect. I’m not great at phonetic spelling but it’s pronounced more like me-elle (elle like the name). I hope this helps for anyone trying to figure out how to pronounce it when ordering at a cafe! (btw if anyone is curious cafe is also a spanish word, it means coffee! if you see it spelled caffe, that’s the italian version. both have accents on the e but I can’t type them haha)
